Classroom Workshop FAQ's

What do I need to know about booking classroom workshops?

Booking early for best date availability is recommended. Payment, by credit card or in the form of a purchase order, is required to secure the workshop, which will be refunded or rescheduled if the regular classroom teacher is absent on the day of the workshop. If you have questions, please send an email to Program Manager, Annika Pint, at annika.pint@firstroboticscanada.org or call (416) 694-0187.

What Grades are the Workshops for?

Workshops are available for students in Grades 1 – 8. Students in Grades 1 – 3 will use LEGO SPIKE Essential during their workshops and students in Grades 4 – 8 will use LEGO SPIKE Prime.

Are the workshops virtual or in-person?

Both our online and in-person workshops are hands-on and curriculum-based, and are facilitated by one of our expert presenters. Regardless of the format, students will learn that in coding and robotics, there are no mistakes, only discoveries.

Online workshops are 60 minutes long and can be booked anywhere that there is reliable internet. Prior to the workshop, you will receive a link that can be used to connect with your workshop facilitator on the day of the workshop, at the specified time. Students will learn how to program robots in virtual environments using a FREE platform, called FTC SIM, that can continue to be used and explored after the workshop.

During in-person, half-day workshops, which are 2.5 hours long, Students will have a hands-on STEM learning experience in which they design and build LEGO robots, learn and apply coding skills that align with expectations in the Ontario mathematics and science curricula, and program their robots to complete a series of fun challenges.

At this time, FIRST Robotics Canada is offering a limited selection of in-person workshops in Toronto, York Region, and Bruce, Grey and Simcoe Counties.

Who will be facilitating the workshops?

FIRST Robotics Canada workshop facilitators are STEAMazing! They are topic-specific experts, highly trained and mentored, with regular opportunities to enhance their skills through ongoing professional development.

How much do the workshops cost?

The in-person workshops cost $500 for a half-day workshop, $1000 for a full-day workshop. The virtual workshop cost $200 for a one-hour workshop.

Why don't I see my school board?

In-person workshops are currently available in a limited number of schools in southern Ontario. If you do not see your school board listed, please contact Program Manager, Annika Pint, at annika.pint@firstroboticscanada.org to discuss the possibility of bringing FIRST in Class workshops to schools in your region.

How long does it take to book my workshops?

Once your booking request has been received, the Program Manager will contact you by email to indicate on which of your preferred dates the workshop has been tentatively scheduled and provide a payment link so that you can secure the workshop by making payment using credit card or purchase order. Booking as early as possible will increase your chance of receiving your desired date, time and format!

Is there a limit on the number of workshops we can purchase?

There is no limit on the number of workshops that can be booked and although the calendar shows that only one, half-day workshop can be booked per day, it is possible to book both morning and afternoon workshops at the same school. Please contact Program Manage, Annika Pint, at annika.pint@firstroboticscanada.org to discuss this option, if desired.

Is there a limit on the number of students that can attend a workshop?

Yes. In order to ensure that all students have a hands-on experience, there is a maximum of 30 students per workshop.

What types of resources do we receive after the workshop?

Teachers will receive access to an on-line robotics simulator so that students can continue their learning after the workshop. Those interested in starting an extra-curricular FIRST LEGO League team or in implementing the FIRST LEGO League program in their classroom will receive an exclusive teacher guide and a rebate on the cost of program registration!
