FIRST CANADA MARK AND RHONA BREADNER LEADERSHIP FUND


Through the generosity of the Mark and Rhona Breadner fund, FIRST Canada is proud to encourage and reward young STEM Indigenous and Black youth enthusiasts as nominated by their teacher mentors.
This prize will encourage successful FIRST LEGO League team-aged members (9-14 years old) to continue with their STEM interests and progress into the FIRST Tech Challenge and FIRST Robotics Competition teams and programs run by FIRST Robotics Canada.
Winning students will receive a unique FIRST Robotics Canada orange hoodie with a custom logo. Additionally, $1000 will be available to students to use as follows:
- Option 1: $500 toward a FIRST team registration in Canada (FLL, FTC, or FRC) & $500 toward a personal FLL or FTC starter kit
- Option 2: $1000 toward registration fee and/or kit for a FIRST team
In addition to the funding, individualized mentoring opportunities will also be available to the selected recipients.
ELIGIBILITY
- Complete and submit the application form no later than 11:59 p.m (ET) March 15, 2023 date;
- Student participated on a FIRST LEGO League Challenge Team in Canada (2022-2023);
- Self identifying First Nations, Inuit and Métis youth, Black youth – Ages 9-14 yrs

APPLICATION INSTRUCTIONS AND PROCESS
- A completed application form submitted by a Mentor
- A brief essay based on some or all of the below criteria (no more than 500 words)
- Criteria for selection shall include, but not be limited to a student’s:
- Interest in STEM
- Ability to involve a diverse group of people on the team and create a welcoming environment for all
- Participation in the FIRST programs and roles on the team
- Active participation in their community and among their peers
- Strong commitment to achieving their educational goals
- Support and encouragement of others to pursue their education
- Demonstration of Gracious Professionalism and FIRST core values
- Behaviours that set the student apart from others
- Ability to motivate and lead fellow team members
- Upload Pictures (1 required photo of nominee, preferably a headshot, up to (2) two additional photos, all photos no more than 14 MB in total)
- Mentor/teacher nominates a maximum of 2 FIRST LEGO League Challenge aged students based on their passion, dedication to their FIRST team, community work and leadership skills
- Winning students will receive a unique FIRST Canada orange hoodie with a custom logo
- Additionally, $1000 will be made available to students to be used as follows:
- Option 1: $500 toward a FIRST team registration in Canada (FLL, FTC, or FRC) & $500 toward a personal FLL or FTC starter kit.

Before uploading your application, please ensure you have the following items:
- A photo release form signed by the nominees’ parent or legal guardian
- At least 1 but no more than 3 headshots of the nominee (14 MB in total)
- Shirt size of the nominee (will be used if the student is selected as a fund recipient)
- A brief essay (no more than 500 words)
